The Verendrye Museum, members, and directors invite barbecuers across the state to register for the Verendrye Museum’s 7th Annual Backyard BBQ Brisket Cookoff. The BBQ competition is a fundraiser for Verendrye Museum, Inc., which supports the original museum, The Depot Museum, Sansarc Country School Museum, Log Cabin Visitor Center Museum, and the 1905 County Jail Museum.

This year, the event will take place during Fort Pierre Trader Days on August 11 and 12, 2023, at Fischers Lilly Park in Fort Pierre, South Dakota.

The Calcutta will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, with People’s Choice to be judged on Saturday between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM. The public is invited to participate in selecting the People’s Choice award by donating $20.00 to Verendrye Museum, Inc.

The event will conclude with a brisket lunch from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM for a $10.00 donation to Verendrye Museum, Inc., and children under five years old eat for free. Attendees are encouraged to enjoy lunch at the park or ask for carry-out.
